BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

We have listened to the media and interested parties telling us America is longer competitive as a manufacturer and we had better get used to foreign-made goods, particularly from China, dominating our choices. Well here is a statistic that proves those traitors wrong. America still produces more goods than any other country- $1.6 trillion worth according to the Federal Bureau of Economics Analysis. While some smart Alecs predict that China will overtake America as the world’s leading producer, the United States currently accounts for about 20% of all manufacturing output. We may be losing some share in consumer goods, but the recession I believe will rid us of the compulsion to buy so much unnecessary Chinese-made junk. America’s economy still pumps out higher-end products like machinery, capital equipment, tractors, defense related equipment, aircraft, chemicals and food as no other nation on earth does.

What we need moving forward is government sponsorship on the benefits of buying American. Already imported manufactured food products with all the health risks attached are coming into the country at the expense of goods made by Uncle Sam. Sorry I still want to buy a Pontiac made in Detroit than a Chinese made Chery, even though they are GM’s joint-venture partner there. If we don’t stand up as a nation and show some patriotism our days as the greatest manufacturing nation on earth will certainly be numbered. Now we have Wall Street losing its significance as the shaper of America, all we now need is the media feeding us with good news about American industry and how well we make so many things.

For me I don’t really care where my sox and underpants are made, but there is nothing better than an American-made pair of jeans where the denim has come from the textile factories of the Carolina’s. When it comes to cheap clothing for the masses, sure I accept that Wal-Mart does a great job as screwing Chinese factories, so the junk that hangs and sits on their stores’ racks and shelves enables a poor family at least to be clothed in something new. Do I care about consumer electronics not being made in America anymore? Probably not. We have to do our bit in allowing poor nations to build a manufacturing base, so I accept there has to be a little give and take.

I could not help but laugh the other day when the CEO of Delta Airlines announced a further downsizing of the company and party to that was closing down Delta’s call centers in India. Why? Poor customer feedback. Yes, all over the country, Americans by the hundred’s of thousands have lost customer service jobs to Asians in Asia whose English at times is almost unintelligible. Delta leads the way in bringing those jobs back to America in the hope their customers’ levels of satisfaction return. It means at Delta and America another 4500 jobs coming back home that should never have been taken away in the first place.

If American’s stick up for what is right, corporate America will be forced to think about how important it is to behave in the best interests of the country? America needs to make more things if it is to climb out of this recession and start reducing the national debt.
