PATRIOTISM – AMERICA LEADS THE WORLD!

on June 14, 2010 in OP-ED

No nation on earth celebrates its anniversary or national holiday like the United States of America. As a naturalized American citizen I contrast the difference between what I experience as an American citizen and my former homeland, New Zealand. In America, July 4th is about block parties, Old Glory hoisted from roof tops, concerts in every city concentrating on great American music of yesteryear, with the joy and merriment culminating in unbelievable fireworks displays nationwide. Eight thousand miles away for the past thirty years Waitangi Day is an occasion for the indigenous Maori to come out of the woodwork and take over the event protesting their grievances, most of which go back 175 years. Their spiteful, rude, ignorant and arrogant behavior can include spitting, throwing eggs and mud at the Prime Minister, refusing him entrance to the grounds where the major ceremony takes place, chopping down the flag pole and yelling obscenities to every dignitary who is not Maori. The news broadcasts are filled with the events that truly make it a day of misery, not joy.

The way the national anthem (apart from Rosanne Barr at a baseball game few years back) is sung at special events sends shivers down the spines of all those in attendance and if it is outdoors I never cease to wonder how the pilots of those FA 18’s can fly over the stadium with split second timing at the completion of the anthem. I will never forget after 9/11 how every second car flew the stars and stripes for months and months after the tragedy. I am one of many local residents in my neighborhood who flies the flag fifty-two weeks of every year. Every time I leave or arrive home Old Glory reminds me of how lucky I am to live in the greatest nation, bar none, on earth.

This week Germany’s most famous footballing son Franz Beckenbauer expressed his disgust that the German World Cup soccer team management decided it was optional for players to sing the national anthem before the start of the matches. The fact that over half the team is made up of “new” Germans (mostly refugees from some pretty disgusting countries- which in itself would make Adolf Hitler turn in his grave) who probably can’t speak a word of German anyway is a soft way out rather than attack the issue. The other thirty-one finalists, especially the USA, have been fine tuning their singing skills for months waiting for the occasions to sign the national anthem. Germany still has post WW 2 issues where the liberals still want to play down the celebration of nationhood, but they have it all wrong. Franz Beckenbauer is absolutely right in his assertion all team members should stand together with pride and sing their lungs out, “The Song of Germans”, Germany’s national anthem. If the “new” Germans won’t participate, as far as I am concerned they don’t deserve to represent Germany and should be cast out.

The World Cup

on June 14, 2010 in Company News

The World Cup has started. As much as I would love the USA to reach the final, there are thirty-one other countries vying for the two spots. CII, a veritable United Nations, has employees with mixed feelings should America fail, where they will look to their original or parents’ homelands for success. Countries include; England, [...]

LATINOS NOW RULE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

on June 9, 2010 in OP-ED

It has often been said in California by Mexican immigrants that with the help of illegal Mexican immigrants, they are winning territory back taken away from them nearly 200 years ago. And nothing is going to stop them. The simple fact of the matter is that statement is entirely true. Is it for the better? [...]

By 1990 Japan’s bubble had burst and while it remains the world’s second biggest economy, the country has undergone significant change, most of which is not for the better. Real income has declined over the last twenty years resulting in poverty and unemployment thus becoming huge a social problem. Deflation has impacted upon the domestic [...]
